Kay Brothers Amery Hillside Shiraz 2005
Kay Brothers Amery Hillside Shiraz 2005
Region: SA- McLaren Vale
Size: 750ml

Tasting Note:

Wine Advocate 93 points!
"The 2005 Shiraz “Hillside” was aged for 28 months in mostly American oak. Deep purple in color, it has an enticing, expressive bouquet of smoke, bacon, game, and blueberry. Opulent on the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered, spicy, ripe, and mouth-filling. The tannins are well-concealed but should permit 5-7 years of evolution in the cellar. Drink this top-notch effort through 2025."
Wine Advocate #173 Oct 2007
www.wineadvocate.com

"Aromas of forest berries, mulberry, aniseed, new leather, a little black pepper and a fair amount of minty mocha oak. On the palate full bodied with blackberry and mulberry fruit, oriental spices, aniseed and new leather. It tastes dry, meaty and savoury but also has good fresh berry fruit. Plenty of strong fine tannins and warm alcohol. Good length of flavour with an aniseed and new leather aftertaste. A hulking, masculine wine of integrity and character."
Drink : 2011 - 2020 93 points Gary Walsh, Winorama

"Bright red fruits, particularly fresh and vibrant on the bouquet; deeply fruited and long, with fresh acidity on the finish."

About - Kay Brothers
This artisanal producer in McLaren Vale has an ancient vineyard sitting right in front of the winery. The splendid Shiraz vines are over 100 years of age. The winery itself produced between 6,500 and 10,000 cases of wine, almost all of it Shiraz, with small quantities of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are no white wines, although a small quantity of spectacular fortified Muscat is produced. Most of the reds spend 18 months in a combination of 50% new and 50% old American oak, but the Block 6, as well as the Hillside Shiraz, are aged in 100% American oak for 24 months. The production ranges from a low of 400 cases (in 1999 and 2000) to just over 1,000 cases from the 100+ year old vineyard that is usually cropped between 1.5-2 tons per acre.
About - Kay Brothers Hillside
"The Hillside vineyard had its beginnings in 1992 when cuttings from the 100 year old gnarled vines of Block 6 were planted on the eastern hillside of the Amery property - further plantings of the Block 6 clone took place in 1993, 1997, 1998 and 1999. This is the 8th vintage release from our Hillside vineyard, with the first being from the 1997 vintage. " kaybrothersamery.com
